JKR needed Lily being given a choice for the protection be active. If
she had not been offered, she hadn't sacrificed for Harry: she simply
had died and Harry had died later. It might happen that it's not
important the reason, Lord Voldemort simply said the words without
thinking, not realizing what the consequences of them would be. Or
perhaps, as other poster have said, he was tired after the battle with
James.

My theories are James severely weakened him, would have killed him if
not for the fact only Harry could (hence the laugh heard, as Voldemort
realized he truly cannot be stopped by anyone but Babykins Or, his
favorite program was on the teley.

Perhaps James' intentions were not hurt him but distract him. Did he
knew LV was immortal? anyone knew at that time that he was?

Even d didn't know for sure, until COS. But you know they had to know
the prophecy. I can't see Dd telling them V's targeting Harry, they
need to go into hiding, but never revealing why. Then again, that
could explain the lack of trust in using him as a Secret Keeper.

And I think the question, at least to me is not Why he left her live,
but what had happened after he had killed Harry. Did he have any plans
that involved her? Big chances are that Lily had tried to fight him and,
as he couldn't die, she had die instead. Why bother offering her a
chance, then?

Apparently, once Harry was dead, he would have bid her a good day and
left. Then he would have shot up the Dark Mark in triumph.

You made it sound pretty cool.

Well, might as well do it with style and a sense of flair.
