I have read the statement made, and I disagree. I assume that
Dumbledore did NOT know that Pettigrew was the secret keeper. There
is nonetheless no reason to believe there was a mistake, regardless of
whether Dumbledore did, or did not, know the secret of where they were
hiding.
SInce there is
nothing to establish that Dumbledore did know the secret - it very well
could be a mistake.
Either way, there is no reason to suspect a mistake.
We do know that he did not know that Sirius was not
the secret keeper - Sirius" trial give us that information. To that you
have agreed.
Yes, and I have already explained why that does not convince me of
anything.
However - the first problem is - WHAT WAS THE SECRET?
The location of the hiding place. It is very analogous to the
fidelius charm that protects the HQ of the OOTP ... at least, there is
no reason to suspect otherwise. Probably something like "The secret
hideout of James & Lily Potter is located at 4 Screechowl Lane,
Godric's Hollow, Scotland."
Remember - according to McGonagle At Rosemerta's - The secret was where
they were hiding - and Sirius was the secret keeper, and it was Sirius
that caused their deaths.
Right. So what's the problem?
This has to be an assumption - since Sirius was NOT the secret Keeper.
That means that Lily and James planned to create a secret hiding place
and planned to use Sirius as the secret keeper - and this was something
known to the OOP.
Known to some of them, anyway.
However - Lily and James changed the secret keeper
sometime after it was discussed with the OOP and before V came. SO - the
OOP people were not stopped from telling this prior information at the
trial. Someone at the trial should have immediatley noticed that
something was wrong - because only the secret keeper should have been
able to tell someone else about the secret. Yet - it appears that
everyone knew it.
Presumably, the identity of the secret keeper is not part of the
secret. Perhaps, such an arrangement would be impossible with a
fidelius charm. Voldemort, naturally, would be very interested to
know the identity of the secret keeper. This explains why the Potters
would hold the identity of the secret keeper more closely than the
secret itself. They could let Hagrid know where they lived without
fear, for the magic would prevent him from blabbing to anyone else,
but they could not tell him who their secret keeper was, because that
was not protected.
Remember - the assumption was the Pettigrew was DEAD -
which would have frozen the secret in its place at that time. Even if DD
and Hagrid knew the secret - they should have not been able to talk
about it to others - only Pettigrew should have been able.
So far as we know, no-one has ever discussed the fact that their
secret hiding place was located at 4 Screechowl Lane. You are
creating problems by speculating in a manner inconsistent with the
facts.
At the same time - it also appears that everyone knew what happened in
the house - that V used a failed AK on Harry - who survived.
Right.
The only
people who could have witnessed this would be someone Pettigrew told -
and was there at the time.
Probably, but not necessarily, true on both counts. We can only
speculate as to how it was known what happened there that night.
That means that someone WAS there when V was
there - and unless they were hiding - they were DE's.
You are piling assumption onto assumption. This does not even follow
from your previous assumption.
Since the actions
that happened that night are too often mentioned to ignore - we have to
assume there was a witness that was able to speak.
We do not yet know how dumbledore knew what he knew. Since he is very
smart, it is dangerous to speculate.
