THe problem with this whole thing is the secret. Who knew?

James, Lily, Hagrid, Sirius, Pettigrew ... at the very least.

Probably also ... Dumbledore, Lupin.

The problem is that according to JKR - when the object of a secret dies
- the secret remains as current. SO - when James and Lily died - the
secret was still between only those who Pettigrew told about it - since
Harry was still alive. Since the reason to go into hiding was to protect
Harry - the secret had to include him =- ie - where the family was
hiding - not just where Lily and James were hiding. SO------ anyone who
was not in on the secret would not have been able to find Harry - even
if they knew where the house was. Pettigrew was still alive - and Harry
was still alive - the secret should have remained.

I assume it was still in effect.

SInce the secret had not been "released" - WHO told Hagrid?

Either Pettigrew told him (via note, so Hagrid did not know who told
him) or Hagrid was already in on the secret at the time the spell was
cast.

He would have needed to be told to find Harry at the house.

He was told.

By who - only the secret keeper could have told him. That is Pettigrew. Unlikely. Hagrid would then have known that Pettigrew was the secret keeper and should have stood up for Sirius. He did not.

DD could not have
told Hagrid - he did not know the secret - so he could not have found
Harry. IF DD did know the secret - he allowed Sirius - an innocent man -
go to Azkhaban.

Dumbledore probably knew the secret before the spell was cast. If he
did not, he could have found out via unsigned note sent to him.

No - Dumbledore did NOT know the secret. If he did, he would have exonerated Sirius - and Sirius was sent to Azkhaban. In fact - the question is - when did DD learn the secret? AS head of the court - he should have reopened Sirius' case when he did. Yes - the secret spell would have prevented DD from passsing on the secret - but the secret keeper was fair game.

The ONLY way JKR could possibly resolve this problem would be if Harry
was not a part of the secret.

No.

Come up with another way then. Remeber - Hagrid had to find out from Pettigrew ONLY - no one else could reveal the secret - in fact - no one else can reveal the secret TODAY except Pettigrew based on the spell. Both Pettigrew and Harry are alive - so the secret remains in force. So - I can understand how Harry came to know from Hagrid because Harry IS what is left of the secret. However - Pettigrew has not been in contact with anyone from the moment he was "killed" by Sirius until he contacted V. So - the only people who should know the details of that night are those that Pettigrew told. Remember - even V is bound by the spell - and cannot tell anyone. Even Sirius would be bound by the spell, even DD and (etc) would be bound by the spell. Pettigrew was the secret keeper. It appears that no one knew that - so that means that no one was in on the secret.
