British author, British setting - should be in British English.
While I will not argue with you - the decision was made by the British
Author to have an American English version - not the American readers.
Perhaps, I'd be inclined to think that the initial decision on the first was
made with the benefit of input from the prospective publisher.
SHe obviously wanted to ensure the success of the books - ie - MONEY$$$$$
more than she wanted to maintain the ABSOLUTE Britishness of the books.
Actually Jo has said, and I see no reason to disbelieve her, that her
primary motivation was to tell the story that she'd like to read. The
financial interest again is more from the publishers than from Jo herself.
She's also gone on record as saying the best thing about her wealth is
simply not having to worry about how she's going to pay the next bill.
Noting that the American English versions of each book are the largest
sellers of each - it would be hard to quarrel with her.
Sheer population would insure that.
Personally, if I were an American I would be pretty miffed that a publisher
assumed I needed a book written by an English writer in the English language
'translated' or even edited for me but that's just me anyway.
