I think that is why Myrtle is the "debated candidate". Everyone agrees that
Myrtle died when looking into the baskalist eyes. Some think that the
baskalist was the "weapon" used that killed Myrtle and that Tom should get
the "credit".

In the same way, if Toon would throw someone into a tank of sharks with
lasers attached to their heads, we would consider Toon the killer, and not
the sharks.
