I think that is why Myrtle is the "debated candidate". Everyone agrees
that Myrtle died when looking into the baskalist eyes. Some think that the
baskalist was the "weapon" used that killed Myrtle and that Tom should get
the "credit".

In the same way, if Toon would throw someone into a tank of sharks with
lasers attached to their heads, we would consider Toon the killer, and not
the sharks.

Hmm, good analogy...
One question on the basilist, was Tom able to look at it? I'm sure the
soulbit could because it wasn't technically alive but could the 16 year old
Tom? If I remember right Harry couldn't look it in the face or could he?
How'd he fight it without looking at it...

You don't need to look at your opponent directly to fight them. Some
like to use mirrors. of course, that doesn't work with Baselisks, But
still, it's the idea. You don't have to look directly at your
opponent.
