The Horcruxes were used to keep V from departing this plane.
They just have to exist; he doesn't need to retrieve them or
anything. Which is why a wizard with any sense would drop them
in places like the Marianas trench.
Where crustal subduction would have a good chance of destroying them.
Better to pour them into a block of cement and throw that block into the
ocean, far, far away from any fault line.
Cement doesn't last all that long in salt water. It would have to be
protected with Impervius and we don't know how long that spell lasts.
Hermione used it on Harry's glasses and it lasted for at least the
length of the game, but I think it wore off eventually.
Tyvek wrap plus cement plus burial under a very large mountain
(away from earthquake zones) would probably last longer.
