Life isn't fair, and sometimes it _is_ a popularity contest. Rich, good
looking people get much more slack cut for them than poor, ugly ones, no
matter what the poor ugly ones actually started out like. I would like to
think that Snape would finally get a _real_ reward for his actual services

Do people really think that Snape has such a hard time because he is poor
and ugly? I think what you say is true, but i dont know that is applies to
Snape. He is a huge jerk, and your right, he should be getting therapy. His
personality is why people dislike him, not the fact that hes poor and ugly.

in general Slytherins are evil, but they are not poor and ugly?

Is there a Slytherin who is not described as being at best unpleasant-looking?
Especially in the earlier books. Even Draco has a pale, pointed face that
isn't described as handsome. Pansy is the best looking female Slytherin in
Draco's year, and at one point she is said to be pretty but at another point
her nose shape is criticized. In HBP we finally see Blaise and although he
has the dark good looks of his mother, they are spoiled by (if I recall
correctly) the usual greasy hair JKR gives villains, and an unpleasant
expression.

On the other side, there are the less-firmly-labeled Slytherins - almost
stealth Slytherins. Tonks's mother Andromeda, who had to be in Slytherin
because Sirius was the only one who wasn't - do we have any description of
her?
