While there is no doubt that James' treatment of Snape (in the
pensieve scenario) was horrible, we do have to keep in mind that Harry
(and we) see the event isolated, out of context. As such, it seemed
completely unprovoked. It's quite possible that Snape "gave as good
as he got" (as Lupin said) on a regular basis, and for all we know, he
might have been doing something equally sadistic to James a few days
earlier. We may have simply stumbled into the middle of an ongoing
feud of escalating cruelty, the origin of which got lost in the fog.
When Harry talks to Sirius and Lupin about it, he mentions how they
did it from boredom, and they agreed. They didn't correct him and
tell him it was payback. I don't think this was an isolated event. In
fact, from their conversation, this incident lead to Snape actively
attacking unprovoked too. A sort of Hatfield and McCoys.
I don't share your belief that this was the first such incident, which
then provoked the first retaliation by Snape. It's possible, but I
think it's more likely that we simply stumbled across one particularly
disturbing incident in the middle of their ongoing feud.
