The real Harry really did die when hit with the curse, and all we are
reading about is the bit of
Voldemort's soul that was carefully hidden away and raised in such a
manner by Dumbledore that he would become the weapon to destroy
Voldemort for good.

Kind of reminds me of social experiment, I know there are similarities
between Voldemort and Harry, but Harry having frioends and a nemesis
(or several) has maybe kept him away from delving further into the dark
arts, he certainly enjoys reading the prince's book and is enthralled
by the dark sectumsempra spell
