Hey, hey, you two, don't kill each other :)
As far as the original subject is considered, I posted a post on august
the 28th, clearly pointing out why DD couldn't give Harry the
protection Lily did. Of course he could give some other kind of old
magic protection, but it doesn't seem very likely, because even Lily's
protection "has never happened before" and mothers do tend to sacrifice
themselves somewhat more often as teachers do for their students. So it
would be an awful lot of ancient magic all of a sudden, which I don't
buy. But, of course, we can only wait and see.
As far as rules in fantasy writing are considered, I more or less have
to agree with Catherine.
I think when creating a world you can make up a set of rules as you
like, as long as they don't contradict each other. But when you have
them made up, you should stick to them. You can, of course, write
something that is in 100% contradiction to them, but it won't be a very
good piece of writing. JKR herself has made some mistakes (which is
quite understandable, considering the complexity of her world) and I
felt through writing, she wasn't very happy about some things she wrote
in the previous books and then tried to go around it with some
additional rules and exceptions or simply acted as if the problem
didn't exist and probably hoped no-one else will notice. If you scan
through the forums, you'll find loads of examples.
But these parts of the books, that somehow don't follow inner logic of
the stories and the wizarding world, are in my opinion the least
enjoyable.
Speaking in general, there have to be consistence and continuity,
otherwise the fans will surely notice the mistakes and crucify the
author. If there are any fans in the first place.
