Or, they were offered a role that was adult and it just happened to involve
nudity. You seem to be suggesting that the actors picked the movies
because of the nude scenes...
Oh, I am certain that some do precisely that. It is an effort to
shock the community into recognizing that they are no longer children.
Here's a good example. Remember the TV show "The Waltons"? Remember
the oldest daughter on the show, 'Mary-Ellen', played by Judy
Norton-Taylor? Well, she didn't even bother trying to find a movie
as a vehicle to show how grown-up she was. She went straight to
Playboy and did a nude spread back in 1985. She has said that she did
that simply to shake her 'nice girl' image from "The Waltons". Twenty
years later, she admits it was a huge mistake. And she has done next
to nothing in movies or TV, except for some Waltons' reunion shows and
an occasional guest appearance.
Whether it's Playboy or the a nude scene in some second-rate film, the
motive is often the same: to attract attention to the fact that the
former child actor is no longer a kid and demonstrate that they are
mature enough to handle adult roles. And the strategy almost never
works.
There are a few actresses with enough clout to be able to get
away with it, who get so many scripts offered to them that they
can pick and choose (Julia Roberts
Roberts doesn't do nudity? She never appeared nude in _Pretty Woman_?
Body double. (Named Shelley Michelle.)
What he really needs to do is demonstrate that he can act.
Which is what this play might do.
His acting in the HP movies was wooden at first, but has improved
a lot over the years. He needs to take a role in a dramatic movie
(not a play) that reveals his true potential to audiences and directors
alike, something very different from his Harry Potter character to
show he has range. The nude stuff is just a distraction.
Except that, first off, he might not be nude. And second, there's more to
this play than nudity. Is it Dan's fault that that's all some people are
focusing on. I mean, did you consider that he might have taken the role
for reasons that had nothing to do with "OMG! Nude scene!".
Instead of talking about his great acting, people are going to be
talking about his bare ass.
How is that his fault?
It's simple. One has to be realistic about the way the world works.
This is a world where many grown women will still giggle like silly
schoolgirls if a man's fly is accidentally left open on stage, and
where the Net is filled with photos of female celebrities who
accidentally exposed part of a nipple when they bent over in an
evening gown. People are obsessed with both nudity and celebrities,
and especially with any combination of the two.
If you're a major star like Dan, and you suddenly announce that for
your first non-HP role you're going to be romping about in the buff,
of course the media (and net gossip) is going to run with it. It was
predictable, and either he or his handlers should have seen it coming
If the play does include nudity, the focus is never going to be on his
efforts as a serious actor, it's going to be on people giggling over
his privates. The nudity, in effect, will be a distraction from his
real attempt to show his acting chops.
Once he has some serious, non-HP roles under his belt, once people
have seen him as an actor in various roles, rather than as just Harry
Potter, then a typical brief nude scene in a movie won't affect his
career one way or the other. My point is simply that doing nude scenes
to jump start one's adult career, whether in movies or in Playboy,
simply doesn't work.
