Well.. think of how your spellcheck works; it offers you another word or
two, sometimes more. And now think how that would be to a person of
limited
or no sight trying to figure it out, even if the computer was "speaking"
the
choices of a new word.

Yes, and in those cases, just choose the "skip" option. But there were
words mis-spelled in the original for which there would be only one
choice
by sound that made sense. Using a spellcheck would certainly not catch
all
the spelling errors, but it would catch some of them.

My god, leave the guy alone, would you all be this critical if he had
dyslexia? You have no idea how his disability affects him or what he
does, so just get off his case!!
I for one think he does a great job with limited means!!

Um.. *I* was not on his case about it. I was defending him.

realy? I thought we where talking about spell checkers.
And it doesn't bother me when questions are asked. And by the way I do have a
form of dyslexia but it deals with how I understand the english lang. That is
why I said I can never learn how english is spelled. To me the english lang is
an always changing thing. Some parts I understand others seam to change. I am
all ways getting the soft explosive sounds wrong as my brain philps things as
time goes by. even if I spell a word right one time I can get it wrong another
time.
before I lost my sight and was found to have dyslixea I had a teacher in the
forth grade that sent me to look up a word. She said if I didn't find it under
one spelling I was to try another. when she realized that I had never retuned
to work she told me that the next day I had to write down each diffrent way of
spelling I was trying to look up. That day I ended the hour we spent on english
with a paper that had 70 diffrent ways of spelling the same word. She thought I
was just trying to be a trouble maker but when that paper was shown to some one
who was trained in looking at things she realized that the words started out in
a pattern and worked out each problem spot so I, E and a's where replaced to see
if I could get it right and at each of the spots this had to be worked out.
This lead to me being tested and finding that I was missing a sound that helpped
most people understand the diffrence and that I flipped diffrent letters
randomly and would not note the diffrence unless it was pointed out. You see my
hand wrote one thing and my brain thought that something else was there. at
first in lessons they would ask me to write a word and when I got it wrong they
would show me the correct shape of the word and ask me if they where the same.
It was hard to get the idea that I didn't always write what I thought I did. I
find typeing is the same way. I go for a T and I type P with the sound I know
when I miss type what I wanted. so I remove that mess ups, but I am still left
with the problem of misspellings when I don't know I am spelling wrong. One day
with the right program and practis I hope to be better.
I am not mad about this but am writeing in hopes to inform others. I hope to
help you understand and hope to make you think when you see a kid haveing
problems and is falling behind in classes to have them look into testing for
problems like dyslexia or hearing problems or even sight problems. There are
ways for all of these people to learn better. I am told that most schools have
a form of testing for these things. You don't have to go to the expencive
places for testing and training. Though like me they may have to wait for a
while to get the test done. It took me six weeks to get the tests done and a
year to get the right speachal classes to start teaching me habbits to get
around the problems. I am not a perfect case but I do get by and still hope to
get better.
Like I said I don't mind questions. Who knows you may find or know something
that might help me.
PS if you have some one with dyslexia in your famly and he or she is not wanting
to studdy spelling I have two bits of advise. get a video game where they have
to read. I gave two dyslexia kids a pokemon game and it has helped. It gets
them to read and the game stops and lets them understand what is writen. It
isn't a time based game. the second is get them to read. If you have to use
comic books to do it then do it. Any reading practis is better then none. Ho
and my mom says get them books on tape so they will understand the vocab better
when they run into the words.
