Yes, by all means read them. If you can stand the boredom of the first
two books, you may get a laugh or two out of the utter stupidity of
book 3, though it is also true many who actually manage to get
emotionally involved in books 1 & 2 are often badly disappointed by
book 3. I agree, of course, that Rowling is in a whole different
league than the utterly mediocre Pullman. Perhaps I should reserve
judgment until Book 7 comes out, but I would be amazed if Rowling ends
up failing as spectacularly as Pullman ultimately did.
I would love for someone to explain to me the appeal of these horrible
books. For starters, I cannot see how one can defend its shallow
preachy moral nihilism. I am not complaining about so much about the
church-bashing, or the teen sex, or the in-your-face gay eroticism, but
rather with Pullman's sly & subtle manipulations on the issue of murder.
