Alex Clark, good point. *Maybe* Snape and Lily didn't spend much time
around each other until Advanced Potions in 6th and 7th years....
However, I still think they knew each other earlier...Petunia's choice
words of "that aweful boy" suggest someone other than James, simply
because she refers to James as Lily's husband. Using the word "boy"
suggests Petunia hasn't seen this guy (whoever he is) since he was a
"boy".... In order to keep JKR from having to introduce other
characters and link them to Lily *and* Petunia, we can assume this
refers to one of the following:
1] Severus Snape (most-likely, since he's already interested in the
dark arts and he's not a pure-blood)
2] Remus Lupin (if Petunia met him before he looked so downtrodden, she
might not call him "aweful")
3] Sirius Black (aweful, in Petunia's opinion, perhaps, but why talk
about dementors?)
I doubt Petunia spent much time around Lily after she hooked up with
James, so this decreases Petunia's chances of overhearing a
conversation between Lily and either James, Sirius or Remus. Since
Snape's not a pure-blood, he might have hung out with Lily and other
non-purebloods during the summers, even when they were much
younger...pre-Hogwarts.

Yes. I have also wondered if that girl laughing at Severus is Lily.
Personally, I think it is.... :)
