I agree with much of your long post, so I'll just comment on this.

The position had been cursed since Riddle was 18, and even though that
was a secret, ALL the staff (and most older students) must have noticed
that no Defence professor lasted longer than a year. If that had happened
for decades in a muggle school, people would have suspected that the job
was cursed, let alone in an environment where magic is all too real.
