Sorry to toss water on your parade, but at the POA stage, Neville is
pretty much the poster child for "nebbish", and it makes perfect plot
sense that Harry, when he wants to be insignificant, borrows the name
of the least significant student in his Hogwarts house. The decision
to make Neville the dark horse candidate could just as easily been made
several years hence.
