It is basically string theory and it is Einsteins thoughts on the
possibility of time travel. You are right in the fact that it is
impossible to go back in time to save someones life. If the person
dies then you didn't go back in time to save their life. The only way
the time turners are used in the Harry Potter series is to be in two
places at once. They never change history. Harry just happens to save
his own life when he goes back in time. There is not two instances of
time in the book. They are already back in time the first time it
happens. The only reason they need to go back in time is so they can
take buckbeak to save Sirius at the same time they are in the hospital
ward. There is no continous loop. Time happened once and the present
and future Harry and Hermoine where there and created the final outcome.
If it's impossible to go back in time and save someone's life, then how did
Harry manage to go back in time and save his own life? How did he survive
the Dementors long enough to get to the point where he used the timeturner
to actually go back in time. It's a paradox and an impossibility.
Quantum Theory allows for the spontaneous creation of sub atomic particles
that can exist for a few billionths of a second but there's no room for the
spontaneous creation of two humans for three hours.
My theory is that they went back in time and changed the way certain events
occurred. The new reality annihilated the old reality instantaneously. No
one would ever remember it, with the possible exception of the time
travellers, and it is as though it never occurred.
Considering that it would take, if I'm not mistaken, according to Einstien's
calculations, all of the energy contained in all the matter in our galaxy to
send a particle back in time a noticable amount, then I dont' think it out
of the question to assume that it would take the destruction of the Universe
as we know it to send two kids back three hours. Of course the universe
would continue on from the point in history that they arrive after using the
time turner. After all, it was the events that occured after they arrived in
the past that are lost. Everything that happened before that is still
intact.
