Going a little bit into fan-fic mode, I could also envision Snape having
been orphaned (like LV) and taken in by the Evans family until reaching
legal wizarding age. Perhaps Snape's mother was simply under muggle
interrogation for a few months. It would help explain his respect for Lily
and protection of Harry. His hatred for James would have been increased by
the stupid decision to make Peter Pettigrew the Potter's secret keeper.

No respect for Lily: in "Snape's worst memory", OotP, he offends her because
of her blood, no matter she had defended him against James...
The short response to that is that he openly called her a "filthy little
Mudblood" to strengthen his candidacy for the Death Eaters. Lily
understood.
I argued the point that Lily was probably the only true friend Snape ever
had 4 months ago in my thread "Snape¹s Overlooked Memory".
You call that "a little bit into fan-fic mode" with a straight face? Wow.
