How about a vote?
So far Kami and GJW believe Snape is evil, and the following disagree...

I have to say I feel like I'm being a bit misrepresented here... I'm in
the Snape is evil camp... (If evil is defined by being a horrible,
hateful, murderous, and self-serving jerk.) but with an exception. I
think he is genuinely against Lord Voldemort. So if you're defining
good and evil as being against or for Voldemort respectively, then I
guess you got me pegged the first time.
Okay.
Snape is evil, loves the Dark Arts, but wants to see Voldemort
destroyed. That's my vote.
That confirms you as the "not evil" camp, Joe.
You know, I see something a tidge objectionable about telling people,
"The fact that you qualify your statement that Snape is evil at all
means I'm putting you down as saying he's not evil even though that is
something you made a special point of saying you don't believe." You
should listen to Joe saying you're misrepresenting him and alter your
classification system.
Thanks. ;)
Personally, I think the biggest joke JKR has succeeded on pulling on us
is the fact that we're debating "SNAPE IS GOOD!" "NO, SNAPE IS EVIL!"
IMO, Snape will end up as morally ambiguous as he has been throughout
the series. I've heard people from both camps say "I will be supremely
disappointed if after all the misdirection, red-herrings, and ambiguous
characterization Snape turns out just plain __________." (insert 'good'
or 'bad' here, depending on the preference of the speaker) And I agree.
I hope JKR wouldn't go to such lengths to paint this wonderfully 3
dimensional character, with flaws, apparant redeeming qualities, etc...
just to turn him into a ready-made cartoon cut-out villain or messianic
figure who saves-the-day in the end. I'm hoping (and theorizing) that
he's a little deeper than that. An evil human being, who knows what to
do, and which sides to manipulate for his own purposes.
But if I had to be unceremoniously crammed into a pigeonhole, I'd say
I'm more of a "Snape is out for himself" kinda guy than a "Snape is
evil" kinda guy... and much more so than a "Snape is good" kinda guy.
