Yes, really difficult spells (and weak wizards & witches) require a wand,
but the more powerful can achieve useful spell-work wandlessly. The most
important example would be a wandless Accio to summon a lost wand, which
I guess would be a major requirement for Auror trainees.

Well, you were right; this is why I say fans are too quick to rule out
new ideas (new to us) when Rowling still has one more book to publish.
