I do not see why it would be such an alien idea, given that Tom is very
intelligent, and the Purloined Letter Principle does not involve love.
There's a danger in using strong magic to protect his Horcruxes, in that
this might be turned against him - as indeed we have seen Dumbledore being
able to detect the hidden spells. With multiple Horcruxes available, the
optimum strategy is to hide one in a contrary manner, to cover the bases.
