While living with Snape, we see that Peter "has taken to listening at doors".
Somehow this is not a surprise.

But it makes me wonder. We know of one other situation of listening at doors
that was crucial. (The twins' "extendable ears" do not, yet, count.)

Dumbledore was very surprised and disturbed when Harry reported what he had
learned from Trelawney: that Snape had been the one who was caught listening
at the door.

Is Snape just pointing out the obvious?
Is this really new behavior on Peter's part? (I doubt it.)

Or did Dumbledore meddle with Trelawney's memory, much more skilfully
than Slughorn did, in order to create the false memory that Snape had
been the listener, and not Peter? It was Peter, after all, who was the
ultimate traitor. And someone had been giving information regularly to
Voldemort. Snape wasn't in the Order then; he couldn't have been /that/
traitor. Who else would have known specifically that two members of
the Order had just become pregnant? That isn't the kind of thing that
people would have spread as news, except among their closest friends.

Was that why DD was so upset? Not only had Harry found out something
damaging to Snape, it was something that wasn't true, and that DD
couldn't correct because of some other level of planning?
