They probably *thought* they did. I can easily imagine Tom having
several "girlfriends" (either sequentially or, unknown to each other,
simultaneously) who thought he loved them and who were convinced they
were his closest confidants. Some of them might even have been sexually
involved with him. But from his perspective, they'd have been nothing
but trophies, notches on his spear. He might have "chosen" some of them
based on what he thought they could do for his advancement. He'd
probably have gotten sadistic pleasure from "stealing" a girl from
another boy. Remember that while sociopaths are incapable of actual love
and empathy, they're often extremely capable of faking it convincingly.
