I think the "mastery of animals" was originally just his ability to
speak parseltongue, and the fact that snakes sought him out because
he could understand them.

Another point about Horcruxes: so far, most of them have been
associated with gold.
Diary - wasn't; the name written in smudged ink, back imprinted with
a muggle store name in Vauxhall Road. (was the imprint gold leaf?
sometimes they are)
Peverell Ring - black stone set in gold. Incidentally, a man named
"Payne Peveril" is known to have lived in A.D.1070; he was descended
of a 6th century Welsh warrior named Owain Ddantgwyn, who was called
the "bear warrior". Owain is one of the many possible sources for
the Arthurian legend. His descendant, Payne Peveril (PP!), had a
life that in some ways matches the adventures of Perceval in an
A.D.1330 manuscript. [from a book quoting from Graham Phillips,
_The Search for the Grail_, 1996]
Slytherin Locket (assumption) - gold.
Hufflepuff goblet (assumption) - gold.
I'd say it's a good bet that most of the remaining ones will turn
out to be gold or gems set in gold.
Naturally, there are suddenly many gold necklaces and lockets, etc.
Silver, on the other hand, is neutral. Most of DD's magical
implements are silver, but so are the silver snuffbox and
the nasty little tweezer thing in the cabinet at No.12.
What happened to the stuff that Sirius threw into the trash bags?
One of them was the Black family heirloom _gold_ seal-ring.
Another was the Order of Merlin, which is almost certainly gold.
(Where does wizard trash go? If it's "vanished", where is it
vanished _to_? Or did Sirius magically burn or melt it? The
silver goblets were supposed to be thrown out, but Mundungus
managed to get them.)
What happened to the bottle of blood? I'll bet it was dragon's blood.
Harry'll just have to get Slughorn's bottle, or find some in Snape's
storeroom, next to the bottles of werewolf-control potion.
