SPOILERS FOLLOW
Hi all,
Way back in Philosopher's Stone, when Harry visited Gringotts with
Hagrid, Hagrid retrieved the grubby little package from Gringotts vault
713. In PoA, in Sirius's letter to Harry, he states that when purchasing
the firebolt, he had the gold taken from his vault - number 711. As
these are the only two vaults mentioned by number in the book, the idea
that 712 has something really important in it sounds pretty likely to
me.
One possibility is that the Horcrux RAB took is located here. If RAB is
in fact Regulus, then it is entirely possible he and Sirius had
neighbouring vaults (I know when my parents first opened a bank account
for me, they opened my sisters' and mine at the same time, and we had
consecutive account numbers). As Hagrid said, Gringotts is about the
most secure place to keep something - and if Regulus was on the run, I
can't imagine he had time to create any better security than Gringotts
could manage. In any case, carelessly leaving such an object around the
house for Kreacher or Mundungus to find 17 years later seems a tad
incompetent for someone who discovered LV's most closely kept secret.
Alternatively, #712 could be Dumbledore's personal vault, and he may
pass it on to Harry now (or his brother, and he may play a role in book
7).
