Good point. But didn't DD say that V would have hidden the Horcruxes in
places that had significance to him? We know one was in the cave where
he tormented his fellow orphans when he was a child, and another was in
the ruins of the home of his mother and grandfather. Given the significance
that Hogwarts played in his early life, it *would* be in keeping with his
behavior to have left one there. I suppose the pertinent question is whether
or not he learned how to create a horcrux prior to leaving Hogwarts or not, as
it seems unlikely to me that he would have been able to come back and
leave one hidden (his visit to apply for a teaching position seems too short to
have allowed him to creep about and find or get to a good hiding place.)
Was the diary (written when he was 16) created as a Horcrux, or did it become
one later? If the former, the implication is that he was able to create a
horcrux at the age of 16. ( Another question is what murder was associated
with its creation? Myrtle? His father & grandparents? The latter seem the
more significant killings, so would be more appropriate to the creation of
the horcrux.) I would not put it outside the realm of possibility that a
horcrux was hidden in the Chamber of Secrets somewhere. As Slytherin's
last heir, he would have thought himself the only one able to gain entrance to
it (at least at the time he had it opened - he would not have known about
Harry at that point), so it should have seemed a very safe place to hide it.
Perhaps the muggle orphanage (or its remains) would be another place of
significance to V, and as such be worthy of hiding a horcrux.
The Riddle family house also seems to me to be a likely hiding place. Not
only was it a significant locale, but the murders of the Riddle family there
would have made the creation of the horcrux there quite convenient. And having
visited it quite recently, he could have checked up on the safety of it at that
point.
What other locations could be seen as "significant" to V?
