(This is a post I posted to Asus' forum but wanted it to be here as
well. My thanks to Paul and Andy)
FYI for the group. Here is my system
1 WD 150GB Velociraptor (boot drive, not RAIDed)
2 WD 750GB Caviars (RAID1'd)
Sony BD-ROM BDU-X 10S
Vista 64 Home Premium
I had a hell of a time getting everything installed the way I wanted
it. Namely, just a simple RAID1 where I can store my mp3s and
photos. I had to reinstall Vista because I installed it when the
drives were set up as IDE. I went back later and then setup things as
RAID because I was having problems with the DVD-ROM drive being
identified on POST. I still don't trust the system 100% at this point
but it seems to be stable and is installing updates as I type this (on
my trusty XP laptop). Actually, now that I am revising my post things
seem to be pretty good. I'm holding my breath.
I have the latest BIOS, 0311.
FYI, I did not install any drivers during my Vista install to get the
RAID1 array to work. I have this on the Intel controller and not the
Marvel SAS controller.
I had the Sony BD-ROM installed in the SATA Port 1. This causes all
kinds of problems, firstly, when you want to install Vista on a bare
machine. When you boot the system 9/10 times the BIOS cannot find
what is sitting on SATA Port 1 and even though you've set the timeout
to be 0 or 5 seconds, it will wait approx 30 secs before it times out
and continues to boot. If it does, something weird happens and Vista
will hang while it is booting. The HD activity LED will stay lit but
there is no audible hard drive activity.
So, I don't know if this is a BIOS problem (more likely) or a problem
with the firmware in the Sony (possible I guess).
Out of desperation, I opened my machine and moved the SATA cable for
the Sony to one of the SAS ports (accidently, I didn't know the SAS
ports were there and I didn't know that SAS was backwards compatible
with SATA, so the drive works).
So far (*knock on wood*) moving the DVD drive off of the SATA block
has solved any booting issues. If ASUS monitors this forum, might be
worth it to set up a test rig like this as see what happens.
If you want more detail, just email me. If there's a handy routine to
dump my system config out, I can run it and present it here.
