It's difficult to make recommendations. Do you need internal graphics? Is a
micro-ATX board sufficient? Do you need to use old equipment such as PCI
cards? Do you plan to overclock the machine? A board with P35 or P45
chipset would be a good choice, the P31 if you do not need more than 4 GB
RAM. It depends on your specific requirements to decide which motherboard
is suitable.

I do not intend to re-use any PCI hardware.
My wife and daughter are saying they want new PCs to produce greeting
cards which involve graphic layouts and jpg files.
Greeting cards with graphic layout and jpg files? I used to do that
years ago on a Pentium 90 :-)
Seriously - for those applications you do not need a fast CPU. Nor do
you need necessarily a dedicated graphics card for such applications.
I recently upgraded my old PC with a low-energy AMD Athlon X2 4850e on
and Asus board with AMD 780G chipset. Such a system should be
perfectly suitable for the intended applications and can even be used
to play HD videos.
But as you said you want an Intel processor and an Asus board. So here
some recommendations:
If you are on a tight budget, I would choose the Celeron E1200, the
cheapest Intel model with two cores. If you want a faster option, I
would consider the Intel Core 2 Duo E8200.
Have a look at this mainboard: ASUS P5QPL-VM.
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=801&l4=0&model=2544&modelmenu=1
It is a µATX Mainboard with integrated graphics and VGA/DVI/Display
port connections, with Intel G41 chipset. A typical board for an
office PC. Boards with the Nvidia Gforce chipsets are a bit cheaper
and tend to offer a higher 3D performance, but got mixed reviews.
I am looking to future-proof the systems for them so they don't
outgrow them. Thanks for the great feedback and would welcome any
additional thoughts or recommenrdations
You can upgrade with this board to a faster Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad,
if you ever need to. As RAM is very cheap at the moment, just get 4
gig, even if a 32 Bit OS does not make use of it.
