I can't find this. :-( Can you give me a URL to download?
L worked for me:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/searchView.aspx?keyword=8187
Yeah, thanks.
You mentioned "Install the WiFi control panel downloaded from the
RealTek site", that's what I can't find. I've tried a driver only
install and letting Windows (XP Pro) Zero config until handle it
with no more luck than I had with the ASUS software. :-(
This is the name of the file:
RTL8187B_5_6.1135.0625.2008_Silent_Install.zip
"Control panel" is just my shorthand for the RealTek WiFi AP setup
application, which looks exactly like the Asus setup application,
only there's a different icon. The RealTek start icon looks like a
face made up of blue transmitter/receiver, with red radio waves
for hair. At least that's what it looks like to me. Hope that
makes sense.
Ok, thanks. I Googled that file name after not finding it on
RealTek's site and only got one hit at bulgarianonlinegames, which
gave me an ftp server that in turn gave me that file.
I'll try it later when I'm feeling calm and patient enough. Last
time I tried to get it working I ended up very frustrated!
Thanks again.
The file is second from the bottom on this page. It's B, not L. I'm
confused now.
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=1&L...
Ok. I put the entire file name you quoted into Google, got this page:
http://www.bulgarianonlinegames.com/info/www.windrivers.com/
Which listed this URL:
ftp://218.210.127.132/cn/wlan/RTL8187B_5_6.1135.0625.2008_Silent_Inst...
Which started the downlaod.
I still haven't tried setting it up yet. It was so frustrating last
time I tried that I'm waiting on a good mood to try again.
I hope I don't have to wait too long. :-/
You may not want to try it. I did and it does not work. The network
sets up fine regardless of whether you use ralink , realtek or asus.
I've tried ASUS, RaLink and Windows GUIs with ASUS sourced drivers and
RaLink sourced drivers with no luck. :-(

The problem is "limited connectivity" even after you set the
connection to be used for internet sharing, making the network
private, etc.
It seems there are many people out there who can not make it work.
Good luck.
Thanks. I don't intend to be one of the people who can't make it work.

Shaun , cool, share if you do accomplish and feel up for sharing. I
basically have it on a back burner for the moment.

For what it's worth, a friend came over this afternoon with her laptop and she needed to connect to the internet. I opened the RealTek software and unchecked the "disable adapter" checkbox, waited a few moments for the software to settle down, searched for WiFi on her laptop, found my WiFi-AP connection, chose to connect to it on her computer, and a few seconds later we had a strong connection. Worked first time - no problem. This time I was running my Vista 64-bit installation, and she was running Vista 32-bit. I have a multi-boot system. Didn't try my Vista 32-bit or XP Pro 32-bit installations.

My setup is exactly as described earlier in the thread. Access Point mode, auto-channel, Network Authentication WPA2-PSK, Data Encryption AES.
