Is it possible to make a major mobo change (from gigabyte to Asus)
without reinstalling XP from scratch? Or would this be a very long day
with perpetual problems haunting me?
If it can be done, any pointers or step by step for the software
issues would be appreciated.
Thanks,
What I do to eliminate problems is to uninstall the chipset and any other
drivers for the old MB then shut down. Install new MB/processor or
whatever and then boot to the XP cd. Have the new MB SATA/RAID drivers
ready on floppy and do the F6 thing at the beginning of the install. Keep
going as if you are doing a new install until XP detects the old
installation and choose to repair it. It MUST be the same SP version or
it will not work.
That is wrong! I have used repair installs on a computer with SP2 and my
XP disc is the gold version. I had to reinstall SP2 afterwards but I
already had that disc from Microsoft. The only problem I ever run into is
with Microsoft Office needs to be reinstalled afterwards, but I think that
is true with any repair install.
hmm........When I try a repair with my SP1 disk to an SP2 or SP3 install it
begins the install and then stops with an error message that my version of
XP Professional is older than the installed version and cannot continue.
Maybe it only applies to SP1......... I dunno......:-) That is why I always
use a disk slipstreamed with the service packs.
