yep, full tested backup is critical esp. data
also there another way but most likely not worth the effort for single
change on one pc:
At least not worthwhile for typical home user.
disk os image software along with sysprep
bare metal recovery software
Nonetheless, I would take a full and tested backup of data before I will try
any of the above

Is it possible to make a major mobo change (from gigabyte to Asus)
without reinstalling XP from scratch? Or would this be a very long day
with perpetual problems haunting me?
If it can be done, any pointers or step by step for the software
issues would be appreciated.
Thanks,
What I do to eliminate problems is to uninstall the chipset and any other
drivers for the old MB then shut down. Install new MB/processor or
and then boot to the XP cd. Have the new MB SATA/RAID drivers ready onif
floppy and do the F6 thing at the beginning of the install. Keep going as
you are doing a new install until XP detects the old installation andchoose
to repair it. It MUST be the same SP version or it will not work. Aftera
install of XP just install the new MB drivers and you should be set to go
without conflicts. As always backup your important data first. Nothing is
given.
