Furthermore even the supposedly fast DDR3 designed Asus P5Ex 3 boards that I

I avoided DDR3 dud to the price of 8GB

one more thing, even if one managed to run with full memory capacity at the
desired speed, it is no guarantee to continue to do so reliably.

Today I've removed the 4x2GB memory from the "dead" P5E-WS-PRO and it
has completed 8 passes of memtest86+ in a P5E-VM-HDMI (though I only
only ran it at 800MHz as detected from the SPD)

The P5E-WS-PRO has been RMA'ed, assuming the replacment comes back with
the same BIOS version as the original, it won't support Q9450, I wonder
should I risk 0603 again, or a lower version?

I know this is a little late but I just saw your post. I have had
memory problems with a P5E WS Pro also. Ballistics ran for a month or
so at 1066 set in the bios and then caused multiple BSOD's. Replaced
with G.Skill and the system would not post. Replaced with Kingston and
they ran ok set at 800 set in the bios. Finally, replaced with Corsair
Dominator and they ran immediately at 1066 with the dram speed set to
auto in the bios. They are still running and system is really snappy.
Running the latest bios version 0603. The funny thing is that with the
Kingston it took a long time to post. With the dominator it posts in
just a few seconds.
