I'm having trouble keeping this board stable with more than 2Gb of RAM (2 x 1Gb).

Asus have sent me a Qualified Vendor List. I'd like to put 8Gb in this but I can't get hold of any of the 2Gb RAMS on the list.

Also, they recommend '.......according to some memory manufacturers website, some memory need higher voltage than standard. So, please refer to the memory manual and adjust the memory voltage manually to have a test. If the problem still remains, please change LDT frequency to 4X, test again. Please refer to the manual 4-23.'

Does this sound reasonable. I'm not an export on any of this!

I was thinking of getting 'Kingston 4gb Kit (2x2gb) Ddr2 800mhz/pc2-6400 Memory Non-ecc Cl5(5-5-5-15)Kingston 4gb Kit (2x2gb) Ddr2 800mhz/pc2-6400 Memory Non-ecc Cl5(5-5-5-15) - manufacturer #: KHX6400D2K2/4G'. This needs 2V. Do you think this will work?

Finally, I have 2 MSI NX8600NGT cards in SLI mode. The motherboard will boot with a single card in any of the 3 PCI-EX-16 slots, but will only boot with 2 VGA cards in slot 1 & 2, not 2 & 3. This is a problem because the cards have a large heatsink that cover the PCI-X slot for the audio board. Asus have advised upgrading the BIOS from 1205 to 1302. Has anyone had this problem too?

Thanks for any advice.
Mike

Mike

I just happen to have P5N32E-SLI with 8GByte of RAM that I am configuring at the moment.
I built it using OCZ2N800SR4GK.
I tried overclocking and it was stable at +10%.
I have no need to overclock so it is now back at default.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your help. I've just ordered the RAM.

Incidentally, the BIOS update to 1302 resolved the boot problem with 2 VGA cards in PCI-EX-16 slots 2 and 3, and as a result the audio board is now fitted and working.

cheers
Mike

FYI

The new memory works pretty well for me. At first it was unstable until I changed it to CAS 5, then put it back to AUTO and changed LDT frequency from 5x to 4x. This is stable. I don't know what the differences are but the performance is the same.

One side effect of the new memory appears to be break up of video displayed by Windows Media Player. Flash based video (via Youtube) is ok. WMP video was fine before I changed the memory. The link between the memory and video playback in WMP seems tenuous but I don't know what else to put it down to. There weren't any updates installed at the same time. I've looked for nvidia grpahics card settings and in WMP but haven't been able to find anything. I think i'll put the original memory back in to see if the WMP video problem goes away.
