I know I am probably not in the correct newsgroup, but I have always found the people in here so so helpful and knowledgable.
Through advice from you good people in here I built myself the following PC last year.

ASUS P5B - Deluxe
Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz CPU
Antec Sonata II Ultra Quiet Midi
2 x 1Gb PC6400 Dual Channel (800) DDR Memory
Nvidia 7600GS 256mb DDR Graphics
250GB Seagate SATA II 7200 (already had a 160GB one)
Windows Vista

For a year now I have been really pleased with my PC, quiet and fast and down everything I wanted.
Recently I have the impression that the CPU is not working to its full. |It sometimes seems very sluggish when trying to do a couple of things at one (eg Using AutoGK tp convert to DIVX and trying to open other files.......word excel etc or when running other programs.) I am 99.99% certain it is not junk/crap on my PC as I recently reformatted it (about 4 weeks ago) and I regularly run ccleaner, adaware 2008, spybot etc.

Anycase I stumbled across Dr Hardware and ran a couple of Benchmark Tests
1 The first one was CPU/Memory - result no problems readings were as expected
2 Multiprocessor - Readings were a Total Shock. It showed about 1330 (equivalent to a P3 Xeon 550) and the readings for a Core 2 Duo 6300 would be about 6737)

I installed CPU-Z that was showing the CPU speed at either 1600mhz (multiplier x6) or 2400mhz (multiplier x9).

I am really stuck now knowing what to do. I am NOT an expert on PC's but I am not a complete idiot.
Could anyone please advise me if there are any straight forward programs I can install to check that the processors are running at the correct speed.

ANY HELP or advice would be greatly appreciated

Many many thanks

Mandy

For correctly determining your CPU speed, use the Intel Processor
Identification Utility, available here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1881&lang=eng

I would ignore what CPU-Z says. I also have an ASUS P5B Deluxe
with an E6600 and CPU-Z says I have 6x multiplier for 1600 MHz,
when I know for certain it's 9x for 2400 MHz. The range of
multipliers is 6x to 9x, depending on motherboard clock speed.
If your CPU starts to overheat, it will throttle back to maintain a
safe operating temperature. What's your CPU core temperature?

Also, what are your power settings? You should be using max
performance - 100% CPU. Go to Control Panel > Power Options,
and make sure High Performance is checked. To check further,
click on Change plan settings > Change advanced power
settings, and make sure both min and max are 100% in the
processor power management settings.

Ian and RobV many many thanks for that.
My CPU Temperature is usually very good. Currently the room temperature is about 17C the CPU is 27C and the Motherboard is 29C (using PC Probe II V1.04.19).

The power settings were on Balanced; I have now changed them to High Performance. Both min and max were already set at 100% in the processor power management settings.

I installed the Intel Processor Identification Utility and feel a little happier now
The readings were:-

Speed :- Expected 2.40ghz Reported Core 1 2.40ghz Reported Core 2 2.40ghz
System Bus Expected 1066mhz Reported Core 1 1066mhz Reported Core 2 1066mhz
L2 Cache Memory Reported Core 1 4mb Reported Core 2 4 mb

I am a little reluctant to experiment and change things in the BIOS.
I did reset it to default settings (think that is what it is called) and all looked Ok. SpeedStep was enabled.

Obviously I will keep an eye on it. However at the back of my mind it still concerns me why the Benchmark Readings on Multiprocessor using Dr Hardware was so so low :-( I can accept that Dr Hardware might be wrong, but it still plays on my mind.

Once again thank you BOTH for your help and if you can think of anything else that might convince me all is OK I would be very very grateful.

Once again many many thanks

Mandy
