Have a A8N-SLI Deluxe sitting on the shelf and finally have the time

Here is the CPU support list.

Bang for the buck, means "fast enough to do what I want", whatever
that is. The Sempron would probably be pretty cheap, but not
worth the bother of setting the thing up. Whether this project
makes sense, may depend on whether you already own some
matched DDR memory to put in the motherboard.
A dual core 3800+ would make a nice solution. And you might
even find Opteron 185 dual cores still around, but at a price.
The advantage of a dual core, is a slightly smoother desktop,
And maybe some additional performance in Photoshop.
Pay attention to the BIOS release. If available, examine the
sticker on the socketed flash BIOS chip. It may have the
original BIOS release number on it. That release will still
be in there, unless someone has already upgraded the BIOS
revision for you. In which case, you may have problems with
a processor needing a recent BIOS, if a really old BIOS is in
there. Sometimes, you need a crappy Sempron, just temporarily,
to complete the flash operation needed to allow a more
capable processor to be installed. A cheaper alternative, is
to go to badflash.com, and get a replacement BIOS chip with
a newer revision BIOS programmed into it. By plugging in the
replacement chip, and clearing the CMOS, you should then be
ready for any fancy processor you happen to buy. If a compatible
Sempron can be found for less than the badflash price, then that
is the cheaper BIOS upgrade path.
