Have and A8N-E motherboard w/AC97 sound (latest drivers from ASUS website). OS is WinXP. Antec Sonata III case (front panel sound/mic connectors). Connector from case to motherboard front panel pinout is one connector (no individual pin connectors), so it only fits one way. Problem is that the Realtek Audio Control Panel software does not auto sense the mic when plugged into the front panel - it finds it immediately when plugged into the rear connector. Additionally, the mic a has definite echo into the headset (using Teamspeak)- you hear yourself 3-4 seconds after your done talking.
Any suggestions-

To test jack sense, try plugging a pair of headphones into
the microphone jack. You won't hear any sound, and that is not
why you're doing it.
The jacks are supposed to have impedance sensing. A set of headphones
measures 32 ohms or so. The input on your stereo, might be 10K ohms
or so. I don't know what an electret microphone looks like, but it
could be somewhere between those two numbers.
The 32 ohm load from the headphones, may trigger the hardware
wizard, which will ask you what you plugged in. Tell it that
the thing is a "microphone". Then unplug the headphones and
plug in the microphone. If it refuses to detect the microphone,
then since you are already in microphone mode, you should be
all set.
Some sound chips, in the mixer control panel, offer the ability to
select "MIC1" or "MIC2". So you have such a selection ? Maybe you
have to select "MIC2", before the detection feature will work.
Your ALC850 is an eight channel chip, but the CD and AUX connectors
stop working as inputs, if you are using the 8 channel mode.
For echo problems, there are several possible causes:
1) Microphone is picking up signal from the computer speakers.
2) Mixer has several sources selected for input at the same time,
one of which gives a copy of the output signal. Mute the unused
inputs, so that only the microphone is active.
3) Software has a special effect. For example, my SoundMax chip had a
lousy reverberation function, and that puts a short duration echo
in the output signal. I cannot completely disable it.
The most likely cause, is the addition of some third party software,
combined with the speaker mode selection. When using fancy echo
suppression software, sometimes that stuff is only compatible with
the sound chip, when the sound chip is put in "2 channel" or "stereo"
mode. I don't remember all the details. But if you were using something
like Skype and Teamspeak, you might want to check the individual FAQs
for the products, and see if there are any articles about echo.
The solution to most of my problems, was to plug in a PCI sound card :-)
That is another option you can test.

Paul
