Asus' web site for downloads is off line as usual. I was going to
download the manual for your MB and see what it says. I'm not
familiar with the nVidia chipset, as I have an Intel based system.
What you should do is read your MB manual BIOS section and see if
you've missed any settings.

I think I've found the problem:

I posted this to a thread in a private group...

After proclaiming that the hardware could not be at fault, further
investigation reveals that the motherboard may be the culprit.
After successfully installing XP, I noticed a couple of anomalies:
The XP Restart dialog has Standby disabled. When the system is shut
down, the power does not go off automatically. Instead, I get the XP
version of the old Win 95 message: "It is now safe to turn off your
computer".
I retried the Vista DVD, and instead of failing silently as before, I
got a dialog indicating the Vista could not be installed because the
motherboard BIOS is "not ACPI compliant".

I tried updating the BIOS with no positive results. During the
process, I discovered the CMOS battery was dead, and that a
replacement drained in hours (can you say "short"?).

I've RMA'd the motherboard and hope to have a replacement in 10 days
or so (Thank you Newegg!). Then, I'll start installing and testing
again.

How about that. I would never have thought of something like that being
the problem. Thanks for coming back with the problem resolution.
Newegg should have a new MB to you fairly quickly, depending on where
it's shipped from and where you are. I've been dealing with them for
years. IMHO, they're the best.
