: Sorry, I guess I was a bit slow on the uptake there.
:
: If you want to upgrade everything, then yes, they've turned over quite a
: bit of the technology, reducing reuse. It is hard to find a way to reuse
an AGP
: card now, without some kind of compromise.
:
: On this side of the pond, this is an example of a bundle. There was a
similar
: one, that included RAM for not much more, but the RAM was only DDR2-533
stuff.
: A lot of enthusiasts aim for DDR2-800 RAM (or a lot higher, if they are
out
: to set some kind of record).
i was looking at ddr2 667. I usually carefully calculate bang per buck. I
also don't usually upgrade until double my previous setup is affordable.
single core would mean 5600. I don't know how dual core and 64bit affect
performance.

: I think the main advantage of building your own, is determining exactly
what
: you want to buy, and not what someone else dictates. For example, a number
of the
: bundles on that example Canadian web site, include motherboards I would
not buy.
: Some motherboard manufacturers have a better reputation than others, and
once
: the motherboards get down to the $50 range, there tend to be more bad
boards
: that have to be sent back.
Other than asus and am2 i don't know. Its been 2 or 3 years since my toms
hardware, zdnet, and cnet.com email subscriptions lapsed. But i'm finally
doing a proper certified hardware course and have been rebitten by the bug.
With the teacher talking me into a linux course too.
: This site, has customer reviews for the motherboards, so you can get a
better
: idea of what you're getting. Using the M2N-E SLI as an example, these
would be
: the reviews. I use this site, purely for its information content.

:
: "If your a linux user read up if your distribution has problems with
this
: board and hope new ALSA drivers come out"
:
: So you can get a bit of feedback there, so the purchase won't be a
complete
: unknown.
:
: For performance, you can check the charts here. I don't like all of their
: benchmarking techniques, so these charts can be deceptive and require
: interpretation, in terms of the performance to expect. But to look to
smaller
: web sites, you just don't get as many items reviewed in one place.

:
: The graphics benchmarks compare 3D performance, so focus mainly on gaming.
:
: Speeding up the disks only makes sense if they are holding things back.
: If the processor is holding things back, your disk might not be flat out.
: At least some video processing now, has compressed source material (so low
: read bandwidth) and compressed output material (so low write bandwidth).
: If either source or destination format was "raw", things would be
different.

Thanks for that. i download uncompressed avi footage -13gb per hour.
recommended for highest quality. I usually burn 4gb per hour to dvd mpeg2.
Usually with titles, wipes and background music. Some programs are faster
than others.
