Re: Asus A8V Deluxe slower with 2 GB memory

Thanks to all who replied to my question. Interestingly enough if I put 4
cheap Kingston single channel modules in it runs at 400 mhz (although in
single channel mode). If I put in the dual channel Corsair ones, it
downgrades to a slower speed. So it appears that dual channel also has
something to do with it.

It's by design.

Why does A8V Deluxe automatically down-grade from DDR400 to DDR333 when
four DIMMs of memory are plugged?

Answer

It is a protective function when system cannot boot up or any instable
symptoms due to memory itself.
Please enter BIOS setting and manually adjust memory frequency to 200MHz.

You have high-quality RAM, so there's a fair chance that it will be able
to run reliably at DDR400 (PC3200) frequencies in a set of 4. You may need
to try setting the RAM voltage to 2.8 (other choices: 2.6V, 2.7V; I forget
which is the default, but I assume that it's 2.6V), and experimenting with
the 1T/2T command rate. (1T is faster, 2T may be more stable.)

HTH.

Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I just added another gig of memory to my computer to bring it up to 2 gb.
I have 4 identical Corsair 3200C2PT 512 mb modules (Two TWINX
1024-3200C2PT sets). When I run Memtest 86 v3.3 it tells me the memory is
running at 157 mhz (pc314 memory). If I run with only 1 gb using either
set of modules it runs at 200 mhz (pc400). Is this normal for 2 mb to run
slower than 1 mb? The memory works fine and passes all tests.
