Well suddenly it started working with windows, yet the microphone alway
plays out the speakers when connected.
Now I'm trying to get it to work with ubuntu the Linux distro. I have a
Linux chip set file on the ASUS CD, but no idea how to install drivers on
Linux.

I have a new M2N-E-SLI.. I have been trying for days using XP Home to
get sound working on that board using the ASUS CD that came with the
MoBo. I have installed and uninstalled the CD audio drivers many times.
When I connect a microphone it immediately broadcasts out over the
speakers. This happens immediately when windows boots, whether the 7.1
drivers are loaded or not. Speakers on "Lime" color jack and microphone
is on "Pink". It is as if the microphone sound always echo's to the
speakers, as it does in test mode under the Control Panel | Sound. I
have a permanent PA system whenever windows is booted. It quits when
reset until it boots up again. The master volume and mute does change
speaker volume though. Microsoft system sounds (chimes, etc) as well as
Video sounds does not work. Nothing but microphone sound goes to
speaker. I'm not sure, but I may have a defective MoBo.

It is a USB interface audio solution.

The "immediate broadcast" doesn't sound correct. An audio chip should
start in a silent, pop-free mode, until programmed by software. While the
CM6501 has provision for an EEPROM off the side, to hold configuration
info, I doubt Asus would waste money on a chip like that.
The Nforce 500 SLI has 10 USB ports. The motherboard offers the user,
the use of 8 of them. One is used by audio, leaving one unaccounted for.

I have a question for you. Are you using the FP_AUDIO header
for front panel wiring ? Try removing the cable from there,
then put the two jumper plugs back on the header (so it is
back in its factory setting). It could be, that the chip
becomes confused when a user connects a cable to the AC'97
header.
The codec, after all, is not an AC'97 codec. It is a USB
device. I don't know how that header would work, unless
CMedia planned for an Intel standard header from the start.
I cannot find a data*** for the chip, so it is rather hard
to say anything more about it.
If removing the wiring from FP_audio doesn't help, I see
two possibilities.
1) Return to your vendor, and try another board.
2) Forget about onboard audio, and use a sound card. I use
a $7 PCI sound card, so they don't have to be expensive. My
card supports the basic EAX, which has been good enough
so far for games.
