The motherboard has died. Time for a replacement.

That is highly unlikely. If the logo is being rendered on
the screen, it means some BIOS code has to have run.

The fact that the Vocal Post didn't say anything, means
no critical subsystem failed. The processor has cleared
the timer on the Vocal POST chip, and no message will
come from the Vocal POST at that point, unless the
processor writes the needed voice message number
into the Vocal POST chip. And the processor will not
ask for the "Computer now booting from operating system"
message, until the POST sequence is complete. To it
is stuck somewhere, but with video and RAM test complete.

One thing that can be tried, is clearing the CMOS.

Reflashing the BIOS would not be possible, until the
machine is a bit more healthy. The flash chip could
be replaced with another chip from badflash.com. But
I'd only do that if nothing else works. The flash chip
is socketed, and another PLCC flash chip can be put
in place of the current one. It has to be programmed
with a BIOS file of the user's choosing.

Other options would include, removing hardware a bit
at a time, and verifying the computer's response. For
example, powering off and unplugging the computer,
removing all RAM sticks. Plug in, power up. The Vocal
POST should now mention that RAM test failed. The
logo should not appear on the screen in that case.

Then power down, unplug, and reinstall the RAM. If
the machine behaves differently this time, it could
be that the DMI/ESCD was rewritten as a result of
the change in "hardware inventory", and that was
enough to get it to go.

Some members of the A7N8X family, did suffer from a
strange "BIOS Save" problem. The A7N8X-E Deluxe
(I've got one), is the model where they fixed that,
and I haven't heard of one of those having any
problems like the other boards had.

If any progress is made, another thing I'd do, is
disable the logo. It is much better to be able
to see the POST text messages on the screen, as
you get more information that way. There should be
a BIOS setting to disable the full screen logo.

Thanks very much Paul, a very informative answer. I should have gone to see
my friend last night but he had to cancel (going tonight instead), which
means that I now have a good chance of sorting it after seeing your posting.

Cheers mate,

John
