My P5B-E Plus has a Core2Duo E6600 SL9S8. The mobo
came with the 0304 BIOS.
Recently I started getting EHCI handoff errors when
cold-booting into Linux, and some annoying warnings
about bad checksums in ACPI tables, so I looked for
a newer BIOS, found the 0616 one, and updated to it.
However, with the 0616 BIOS I now get a "microcode update
error" at every boot, and I have to press F1 to continue.
(Apart from that, things work fine.)
Both the BIOS built-in flash utility and the DOS-based
flash utility (AFUDOS) complain if I try to flash an
older BIOS version than the 0616 I currently have.
Is there a way to force those flash utilities to accept
an older BIOS than the current one?

They will flash to any bios version. Did you reset bios to optimal defaults after you did the flash. You often have to do that for these types of errors and then reboot and go set your custom settings. I got bad checksum after bios update too and resetting to optimal defaults fixes it.
