Can't install XP Raid5/ P5B-E

I'm trying to install Windows XP on a P5B-E with the onboard raid
controller.

Raid : 4 x 500 GB sata

Boot HD: 250 GB sata.

OS : Windows XP SP2

First I installed XP on the boot HD and this went very well.

After this I installed the additional raid HD's and changed the BIOS
setting as descript in the

MB manual from ASUS

Change IDE configuration

Configure sata as raid

On board serial-ata bootrom = enable

Creation volume on next boot: No problems .

I knew that I had to install the XP again from the googling.

So I put my XP CD in place and booted.

Pressed F6 for the additional raid driver and load them.

No problems.

Installation continues but it halters at the "Setup is starting
windows" syntax.

What have I tried till know.

Reboot with a other XP CD: same result.

Downloaded the latest raid driver and tried again:same result.

Checked the sata cables and they seemed ok.Boot HD is on an red sata
socked.

Reset bios :same sesult.

Disabled raid and it was again possible to do a normal installation.

Disconnected the boot HD and tried to install on the Raid :same
result.

What should I do now ?

Anyone a solution?

ps
Would it be an advantage to use a controller card instead of the
onboard controller.
I have only one lanes pcie slots remaining.
Theoretical my HD's can give 80 x 4 = 320 MB/s and the lane 250 MB/s.
Do I lose here some performance ?
If I go for this solution what are the evaluation parameters for an
controller card ?

Thanks

Enter the BIOS the first time.

Configure sata as raid
On board serial-ata bootrom = enable

Save and Exit.

On the next POST, press <ctrl-I> to enter the Intel RAID screen
in the BIOS. Set up the array of four disks there, making notes
of any custom settings for future reference.

Now, install Windows, and use F6 to install a RAID driver.

That should be enough to get it to work.

Also, according to this, you could enable RAID, as you've already
done, connect one disk, install RAID driver via F6, and install Windows
on a single drive. This puts the RAID driver in place, ready for future
RAID usage. Then, "migration" from "Raid Ready" (RAID driver installed)
single disk to four drive RAID5, is a supported option.

Pg.36 here, discusses single drive to RAID5 migration. You do this
while in Windows, so the migration happens in the background. A copy of
a similar document could well be on your Asus motherboard CD.
(Explore the CD, to find it. There may be a folder with "Manuals"
on there somewhere.)

Previous versions of the Intel manual, used to have a lengthy
section on fault recovery procedures. I don't see that in the
current manual. This page discusses what to do when there is a
degrade or a failure on your RAID5.

"RAID5 volume recovery"
http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-021016.htm

So, you have a couple potential ways to do the install, but the
RAID driver is used for both.

A variety of experiences here, with various Intel Southbridges.
