I have an APC BackUps RS-1500 which is absent of noise. At least to me but
I'm older than dirt and my hearing isn't 100% but I don't wear a hearing
aid. The fans in my computer make more noise than the UPS. It will provide
power for ~25 minutes then will automatically shut the computer down and
then itself. During our occasional Northwest power outages I'll finish
whatever I'm doing; save my work and shut down all that is plugged into the
UPS except our phone. Our phone's "wall wart" needs 110VAC to provide 12VDC
to the phone in order for it to operate. It's a Siemens two line system
with one desk phone and five (expandable to eight) wireless extensions.

Back to the UPS, APC lists the RS-1500 for $250 but they usually sell for
$200 in the local stores.

Go for the biggest size your budget will allow.

subject is quite off topic but this is a group I read regularly and
posters generally actually have a clue.

I'm considering getting an UPS but I have an issue I want to make
absolutely sure I can get around. I'll probably get an 1000-1500 VA
unit in case that has any relevance. I'm also watercooled which is
tightly connected to the issue in question, noise.

All UPS's I've looked at seem to produce noise at 35-45 dB. I guess
line interactive UPS's need some cooling all the time? But since I
sometime take a nap in the same room I want the darn thing to be real
quiet.

Any suggestions?

In a worst case scenario, would it be possible to shut down the PC AND
the UPS using a power strip with an on/off button? Obviously that would
require an UPS that doesn't start screaming or I'll cut the speaker
wires real quick. Technically an UPS that realizes the power
requirement is low enough to just allowe it to shut down (and thus be
fully operational next time) would be nice.


Am I clueless or does the above make sense to anyone?
