Is there any possibility to use more than just 3 GB ?
Thanx, Michael.
or Windows Vista x64 edition. The Windows 32 bit OS has a problem
addressing more than 3 GB because it does not have support for PAE
(Physical Address Extention).
From page 2-14 of my P5B Plus manual.
So your P5B will address more memory if you upgrade your OS to a 64
bit version. Whether another MB would address more than 3 GB
memory with a 32 bit OS, I'm not sure.
onboard
LAN, etc.) to high addresses just under 4GB. They *need* to use
addresses
under 4GB for a 32-bit OS. If a MB maps the addresses above 4GB,
then the
OS drivers couldn't see the peripherals. By mapping the address this
way,
the RAM at those addresses is effectively hidden from the OS and
can't be
'seen'.
Many motherboards have a "remap memory" option that maps the
peripherals to
some super high address outside the range of a 32-bit OS, but
accessible to
a 64-bit OS. When this option is chosen in the BIOS, you need to
use a 64-
bit OS.
Just as in the old days of 'paged' memory, you can address more than
4GB, with a 32bit processor (and OS), using an extra register to hold
a 'physical address extension' value. This is called 'PAE'. Win
XP32,happily supports 'PAE', but the ability to use this to handle
beyond 4GB, is 'turned off' in the standard OS releases!. The same
ability is also used for certain extra security abilities, which is
why the ability is left present in the OS. XP32 _server_, happily
handles beyond 4GB. Historically, W2K, has better support for this
than XP. XP, with the first release of SP1 installed, in the 'pro'
version, had PAE enabled, with full abilities, and happily handled
8GB, but the very next release of 'patch' files from MS, turned this
off for Pro and below!.... There is though a 'downside' to having more memory. On a system using
this ability (or a 64bit OS, with a 64bit processor), all the tables
handling memory address values in the OS, get larger, because of the
larger numbers that have to be held. Unfortunately, on systems with
'only' 4GB of RAM, with PAE enabled, the size of the kernel tables
typically doubles, which can nearly offset the gain from having the
larger address space, and there is a slight performance loss, which
may well make the gain worthless. Unless you have more memory than
this (6GB+), and want to reduce the need for swapping, there is not
likely to be much gain from enabling the ability if your OS has the
ability present. So you don't actually need a 64bit processor/OS, to handle beyond 4GB.
Best Wishes
Thanks for the extra "lesson". ;-)
I see your point about having, in a sense, too much memory. Isn't it funny that most people (including me) think the more memory the better, when one or two gigabytes is way more than enough for most anything most people would use a computer for at this time. Until, of course, 128 bit CPU's come along. It never ends!
Personally, after this build with the Core 2 Duo CPU, I'm holding out for a quantum computer.
Thank you!
