<snip>

I have the a8n sli delux, phoenix bios v 1004, and I put a dual core 4400 in it. Ran just fine, but does not show up as a dual core.

89 watt or 110 watt? Asus says it makes a difference.

How do I find out?

On the top of the processor is a code number.

http://www.amdcompare.com/images/us-en/chart_r2.gif explains it

Unfortunately, it still leaves the question, is it 89 or 110w? Could be either.
Mine say: ADA4000DKA5CF
I don't know what the CF is for.

This chart:

http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-
us&model=A8N-SLI%20Deluxe

says the different wattage processors require differetnt mimimum level bios.

Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ revE6(110W Socket939) ALL 1010

Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ revE6(89W Socket939) ALL 1015.005

I decided to try both, see if one of them works. Unfortunately, though I turn off all protections, I cannot follow those Go links. They start to do something, and it stops. I cannot see anything in the source code for the page to tell me where to navigate to manually. Ah, the wonders of totally superfluous javascript!

If those link to files, could you post a direct link for me? *feels like a baby trying to manage a spoon for the first time*

Your use of "And when I do that (Chipset_Win2K3_V666.zip) I reboot," confused me. You want " Win2K Version V6.66 2005/07/26 update
Description nVidia Chipset(CK804) driver version V6.66 for Windows 2000/2003. To avoid crashing file system, please do update the chipset driver before updating Bios version 1012 or later "

I don't know where you get the information in quotes up there, but I gave you the filename the chipset drivers came in. Apparently (and this is where they saved some money, not hiring a capable translator), the same file is supposed to be good for w2kpro and for server 2003, though that is more akin to xp than w2k.

From the ASUS Download Page:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

" All OS

Version 1016 2005/12/21 update
Description A8N-SLI Deluxe Bios version 1016
Please do read the description before updating BIOS
To avoid crashing file system, please do update the chipset driver to below version prior to this Bios.
For WinXP 32bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.65 or later
For WinXP 64bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.65 or later
For Win2k/2003 32bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.66 or later
For Win2003 64bit system, please download and update chipset drivers V6.66 or later
1- Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx

I've tried to make sense of that. Meaningless.

2- Update awdflash.exe to v1.14 ---------- Did you use this?

Nope, v 1.09 is what they provide. I cannot find anything later.

3- Remove 2.88MB floppy item value ------Did you do this?

What's that? All I have is the stock 1.44 floppy.

So the latast Bios you want to run is 1016 < anything newer is a beta bios >

That was my conclusion.

"Win2K

Version V6.66 2005/07/26 update
Description nVidia Chipset(CK804) driver version V6.66 for Windows 2000/2003.
To avoid crashing file system, please do update the chipset driver before updating Bios version 1012 or later
File Size 32.21 (MBytes)
Download from Global USA Europe China Japan"

is the chipset driver you need to update before updating the bios.

If it's not working you may have to use a single core processor to do the updates before you put in the dual core processor.

This thing is working fine as a single core. If I could get it to do as well as the dual core it is, I would be happy, for about 6 months (I'm a gamer, after all).

Thanks much for your help. Maybe just a little more will get me through this?
