Re: Why so HOT? How to cool?

OK, remounting the CPU Intel fan gave a tighter fit, and now I can get 40C with still 47C on the MOBO. From reading, apparently I'm
not the only one with the 47C mobo, and some think its because the heat sensor is too near the south bridge chip. Some have modified
the board (not sure I want to go that route).

I took out the air channel from the Sonata (BIG plastic pipe to direct outside air to the CPU fan. Now I get 42C on the CPU, and 45C
on the mobo under running conditions. So that plastic tube DOES decrease mobo airflow, but helps the CPU a little.

What's better, a slightly higher CPU temp with lower mobo temp, or keep the tube for a lower CPU temp with higher mobo temp. Its
only a couple degrees C so I'm not sure if it really matters.

I may try a front mounted fan, as I was told the Sonata II case does indeed have an optional front fan mount. Another 120mm might
help the MOBO, and then I could replace that big tube for the CPU and end up with an overall cooler system. Of course, there goes my
QUIET system! Even the rear mount on HIGH (which it definately needs) generates quite a bit of noise.

One thing, the Sonata II is called a mid tower, but seems pretty small for a mid. Perhaps a bigger tower would have allowed more air
and currents for better cooling. I like the case, but was surprised it wasn't bigger than it was.

Intel E6600, Asus P5W DH Deluxe, Gigabyte 7600GS Silent Pipe (no fan), 2 gig Corsair memory, 3 Seagate 300 gig SATA drives, Antec
Sonata II case with 450 PSU. I am running stock Intel fan on CPU and chassis fan in the case. I built for a "quiet" system and NO
OVERCLOCKING. The Sonata chassis fan on HI is fairly loud, yet I have HOT HOT HOT readings. CPU is 62C, mobo is 47C just idling!
What to do? I can get a bigger fan for the CPU, but what about the mobo? I built another system using a Sonata I with Intel
Pentium D, and it runs 10 degrees C cooler! Not sure what is going on, I thought the new Core 2 were supposed to run with less
power and cooler!

I always felt that you should be able to get away with the Intel supplied fan as they worked before for me in the past, even when
running "hotter" Pentium D processors. I've never had such a heat problem.

Any ideas or recommendations?
