Cancel everything I just said. The drive(s) started making that terrible.
noise again. I guess it is the drive or drives and not the P4PE SATA Raid
controller.

I installed two 250 Gig Maxtor Maxline III SATA II drives in a Raid 0
configuration using the controller on the P4PE Motherboard. Everything
worked great except...one or both of the drives would periodically start
making a terrible noise. I talked Maxtor into sending me two new drives
and happened to notice that the newer drives came with a jumper (and
instructions) to set the drive as 150 or 3.0. I installed some jumpers I
had laying around on the two drives that were making the occasional
chattering noise and like magic they seem to be quiet and happy!! Is it a
know problem with the "old" Raid controller on the P4PE motherboard that
causes problems with the new SATA II drives that are not jumpered to the
slower rate? I can only assume that the issue has come up somewhere which
caused Maxtor to include a jumper and instructions on the new Maxline III
SATA II drives - "old" meaning produced in January 2006 and "new" being
produced in May 2006. Comments please.
