Re: Random reboots with M2N-E (even worse now)

Not posting as in what? Are you getting beep codes? Or is it not even powering on?

I don't even get into windows.

It's not posting now, and I know where that option is, it's not a bluescreen
error that happens during the reboot, I'm 100% sure of it.

Are you using WindowsXP ?
If so go to control panel/system/advanced

There should be a button for Errors
Disable Error checking (or, if available :
reboot on every error, or something to that
effect.)

Ok, I will pull out the memory to compare the beeps.

It's what I remember from my classes and experience, not what I pulled
off
the internet. :)
I've known memory beeps to be 3 short ones, but this is on the Award
BIOS,
I've not had too many dealings with PhoenixBIOS, it's probably
different.
I've been building computers fom scratch since I was 8, and have been at
it for 16 years now, thank you very much!

When I couldn't find the 2.1V setting in the BIOS to adjust the memory
voltage, I did download the 0302 BIOS from ASUS' website, attempted to
flash, and got a failure during the very beginning of it. It said I had
set some kind of read-only mode? I don't think the download got messed
up
in transmission.

After I rebooted the system, it came back on, BiosBlock (or similiar
name)
kicked on, I was asked to insert my M2N-E disc, it restored the original
BIOS without write issues, that's when this beeping problem started. I
think in my sleep deprived/rage induced ranting last night I forgot that
little detail, but I'll check the memory, worth a look for sure, once
that's back to starting OK, I'll re-try the flash to 0302.

One long beep, two short beeps is memory, not video (contrary to what
you
find searching the Internet). Either the memory is not there or it's
not
compatible (or the settings in the BIOS are wrong). Try taking the
memory out, you should get the same beep code.

I know, because I had the same problem with my M2N-SLI Deluxe when I
first put it together. My problem was that I needed a new BIOS to work
with my DDR2-800 RAM (Crucial). I used a cheap stick of Kingston
DDR2-533 RAM to flash a new BIOS. Then no problems with the Crucial
RAM.
Crucial told me the memory should work. ASUS tech support told me
about
the beep code. Do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard? The
BIOS for mine allows setting memory voltages up to somewhere around
2.4V
or maybe higher (don't remember the exact number). The Crucial RAM
takes
2.2V, but I have it set to AUTO and don't know what it actually has it
set to.

I have also read multiple places that OCZ memory does not work very
well
in the ASUS AM2 motherboards. Apparently all AM2 motherboards are very
picky about memory. But it looks like you got it work, at least
initially. Another good system test (CPU, RAM, motherboard) is to use
Prime95. This will catch stability problems where Memtest86 will not.
You can run one on each core.

With an ASUS RMA request, you can also do their advance exchange, where
they ship a new board to you first. You have 14 days upon receipt of
the
new board to return the old board. The also charge your credit card,
and
then credit it back when they receive the old board (assuming you get
it
to them within 14 days). I did this procedure during my troubles after
the first RMA with newegg.com did not help. My problems was the PSU
went
bad (though it worked in another computer), so I just returned their
board back to them after trying a different PSU and getting the 2nd
board
working.

One last thing, it Windows is set to reboot when a problem (i.e. BSOD)
occurs, you may not see the BSOD because it's only there for an
instance.
I don't know where the setting for this is, but it's somewhere
accessible.

Seems promising; OCZ site says 2.1V, BIOS only goes up to 1.9v for
DRAM
voltage adjustment. I'll leave that at Auto for now.

Allright, I'm back, set it, reboot

...

Well, now I'm getting some beeps. I rebooted, one long beep, two
short
beeps (video, right?). I've reseated everything and cleared CMOS, no
dice.

I sent off a request for an RMA to Asus. Do you think if they do
repair/replace it that I'm going to get this same stuff next time?
Did
I
get a dud?

I can't take this anymore. I do tech support for my job, it's lunacy
to
come home and have to do the same thing.

I can't play games, I can't enjoy this system.

This all really freaking sucks.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I believe I'm beyond help now and the
board
is really broken

They increasing the voltage to the memory.I had the same problem as
you
with
Corsair DDR1 memory and once the voltage was set to 2.8volts problem
was
solved.
Just check net for correct voltage your DDR2 memory should run a
first
before adjusting.

ghost in the machine

now i can't boot into windows!

posting this from laptop, which has a broken keyboard, so i am doing
this
from a virtual keyboard, clicking on each letter with that
eraserhead
type
pointer

that was a good 10 minutes

truly i've found myself in the 7th circle of hell!

Hi,

Getting random reboots on my M2N-E

XP Pro SP2 (32 bit version)

Athlon X2 3800+
Asus M2N-E flashed to latest BIOS
2GB OCZ2P8002GK, 2x 1GB sticks (Timings in BIOS aren't what is
stated
for
memory, is that a problem?)
Bios is 5-5-5-12, listed as 4-5-4-15
ATI Radeon X1800GTO2
SIIG SC-PR4B12 (IDE RAID card)
2x WDC SATA DRIVES
NEC 16X DVD-ROM drive
Using onboard ethernet, but not sound
For cooling, I've got 2x 80mm on the front fans, these blow right
over
hard
drives, 2x80mm for the back, videocard exhausts outside
Zalman CNPS 9500 AM2 HSF, AS5
PC Power & Cooling 510W PSU

So far I have tested the memory with memtestx86, this ran for
72~ish
hours
without a single failure, stressed out both cores on the processor
for
24
hours, used the PC Probe utility to validate temps, went from 30C
idle
up
to
36C full load even after all that time, but strangely enough during
this
period, I didn't reboot.

No BSOD, just poof, reboots. I can't distinguish a pattern either,
nothing
shows up in the event viewer. I thought at first maybe during
intensive
disk activity while I was doing some massive database updates, but
it
happens even when the comptuter is sitting completely idle.

A motherboard testing utility that I use locks up when testing the
USB
controller.
Name is PC Check http://www.eurosoft-uk.com/pc_check.htm

Any other diagnostic ideas/tools you all can suggest?

I do mean truly random on the reboots, it could be a few hours,
could
be
a
few days between restarts

I've been exceedingly happy with it so far, except for this one
stupid
little thing. For a time I did have the XP64 trial I got from
Microsoft
on
here, it didn't seem to happen in this system at all strangely
enough.

I'm getting ready to load up Linux to see if it occurs in this OS
too,
I'm
pretty sure it's a hardware thing if that's the case.

Very disappointed in Asus this time around, my P4P800 SE provided a
good
many years of constant service before it died, this was to be its
replacement, but it seems I'm not doing so hot with my latest
build.
RMA do you think?

Thanks in advance
